About This Place

Welcome to Ristorante Mare Grande, a delightful Italian eatery nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Tropea, Italy. Located on Via Marina dell'Isola Calabria, this charming restaurant effortlessly captures the essence of Italian coastal dining. With its upbeat and casual atmosphere, it is an ideal spot for beachgoers looking for delicious meals without the fuss.

Ristorante Mare Grande is renowned for its exceptional pizza, and diners consistently rave about the quality of the ingredients and the perfection of the crust. The Margherita di Buffala is a standout, featuring rich buffalo mozzarella atop a thin and crunchy base, complemented by a tangy tomato sauce. Many patrons, like Bogusia Górka, appreciate the balanced combination of flavors, although a few wished for a touch more warmth upon serving.

For those seeking a touch of spice, the Pizza Calabrese, drizzled with local spicy sausage, comes highly recommended by Nicole Heathington. In contrast, the classic Spaghetti e Vongole showcases the fresh flavors of the sea with its herb-infused oil and clams, making it a perfect choice for pasta lovers.

The atmosphere at Ristorante Mare Grande is friendly and inviting, often enhanced by the pleasant disposition of the waitstaff. Max Mustermann admired the relaxed vibe of the family-focused restaurant, where simplicity meets quality. With top-notch ingredients like traditional Tropea onions and fresh herbs, diners are guaranteed a meal that feels authentic and satisfying.

It’s important to note that while the service may not always be at five-star levels, the overall experience, according to customers like Shane, is fantastic. The value for money is exceptional, with whole meals for under 40€, making it accessible to families and groups alike.

Whether you're stopping by for a quick pizza during your beach day or indulging in a leisurely lunch with a glass of house red wine, Ristorante Mare Grande promises a fulfilling culinary escape on the beautiful shores of Calabria. It's a gem worth visiting on your next Italian adventure.

We looked for something serving pizza during our beach time, and this place was good for the purpose. We ordered Margherita di Buffala + addition of red onion. Pizza was very good, thin and crunchy with nice tomato sauce, delicious mozarella and very thin onion slices. Delicious, just could have been a bit warmer. Nevertheless it was tasty. Lady waiting our table was nice, place wasn’t crowded as we came around siesta time. Overall good place to enjoy a meal during beach time

Good food, casual restaurant, good for a beach day lunch

Absolutely wonderful time. We arrived on a Saturday at 1:15 and both the inside and outside were open. Pizza was being served (which isn’t always happening at lunch in Italy) . High chair was available We ordered pizza margarita, pizza calabrese (HIGHLY recommend if you like spicy- topped with a local spicy sausage similar to chorizo), spaghetti e vongole (oil and herb sauce over spaghetti with clams), 2 glasses of the house red wine, and a large bottle of water. The food was delicious. The waitstaff was kind and helpful. The cost was under 40€ which was WELL WORTH it. Highly recommend

There’s a bit of back and forth in the reviews about this place, but just to set the record straight: three blokes from London came here to prove this place and the pizza was absolutely F A N T A S T I C. The dough was crisp, not soggy; the cheese used in just the right amount (much appreciated); and all the ingredients were top quality. We had a Margherita with proper Buffalo Mozzarella, a Napoli, and a focaccia with Tropea onions and chillies. The only regret? We couldn’t finish it all.

Ignore the negative reviews, this place is just a simple family restaurant without all the fancy bullshit. Food is great, service is average, atmosphere is fantastic.

Ambient was not so.nice but hospitality was. There was also a group of older guys playing cards. We were a bit early so pizza was not an option but pasta was great anyway. Must try pasta with ndjulo which is a tipical/local dish.
